RAYs Mont Kiara is the brand new second outlet at the bustling Steppes @ Mont Kiara, with their first cafe already a hit in Petaling Jaya. RAYs is a “modern diner “: diner food with a casual, friendly vibe to match, but in an elegant, classy space that fits the Mont Kiara aesthetic.
Ambience & Amenities
RAYs Mont Kiara is a bright space with full-length windows on two walls. The high bar tables look out onto the road entering Steppes. The small tables in the centre of the restaurant have a mix of regular chairs and simple box stools. Until the hype around Steppes Plaza dies down, expect tightly packed tables and little space between guests.
The washroom is in the back-left corner of the restaurant, behind the stainless-steel door. Inside is a small room with one stall and two sinks with soap. If people are queuing for the toilet and others are washing their hands, it will get cramped in here. There are more public toilets in the Mont Kiara Steppes Plaza.

The focal point of RAYs Mont Kiara menu seems to be RAYs Burgers. There are only six burger options, but at least they are different enough to feel like there is real variety. You can’t have a successful cafe without a weekend warrior’s favourite, brunch and pasta, which rounds out the rest of RAYs menu.
The restaurant has free filtered water. Larger parties received a water jug, but the attentive staff made sure our table for two never had to ask for a refill.
Food at RAYs Mont Kiara
We passed up some of the more interesting options and ordered Ray’s Classic Cheeseburger (RM35). We wanted to see if RAYs could make a great, standard burger that was worth coming back for. There was a good balance of all the toppings, with a sweet, tangy note from the pickle and caramelised onions. The beef patty was thick and juicy; however, I felt that the meat needed more seasoning.
The Ebi Katsu Burger (RM35) rightfully earns its “Ray’s Favourite” designation. I was skeptical about ordering this, envisioning a pitiful amount of prawn ground up into a fine paste and mixed with too much filler. My reaction to my first bite was visceral: my eyes went wide with amazement for a second, before they closed and my body slouched in satisfaction.
There are whole fat prawns in the patty, giving the burger strong flavours. The prawns were perfectly cooked: plump, zero rubbery texture, and with a mild, buttery sweetness. The Ebi Katsu burger is simply fantastic. I suggest anyone eating at RAYs to try it before the restaurant starts skimping on the prawns.
Saturday Worthy?
The cheeseburger was a little meh, but I could see myself coming back to RAYs because I am specifically craving the Ebi Katsu Burger. Right now, visiting during the weekend will require a wait (it was about 30 minutes before we got a table). I don’t feel like most of the other items on the menu are unique enough to deal with the crowds and long queues at Steppes. The rosti is different, and the pancakes looked amazing, but otherwise it’s pasta and avocado toast – common dishes you could get at most other top brunch spots in KL. Still, Steppes @ Mont Kiara is the current trendy spot to see and be seen right now. If you’re craving a tasty plate of linguine and don’t mind the crowds, RAYs Mont Kiara is likely to deliver.
