Malaysian Flavours, Nordic Sensibilities

Bröom Bakery & Kitchen is a Scandinavian-inspired café with a creative menu and specialty coffee that sets itself apart from its neighbouring competitors. Set inside a beautifully restored heritage building on Jalan Sin Chew Kee, this popular Bukit Bintang brunch spot retains its charming old-school decor. At Broom, the vibe really makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time for an authentic Malaysian dining experience… even if you’re eating a plate of fish and chips and sipping an oat milk matcha latte!
Ambience & Amenities
Broom has two levels, with a dining area located on the ground floor and in the upstairs area. The interior still bears the Malaysian heritage shophouse look from years past. Old-fashioned mosaic tiles cover the floor as you walk in. Dark wood tables and rattan chairs make it feel like you’re in a vintage kopitam, or maybe inside a Malaysian grandma’s house.

The toilets are upstairs. After climbing the staircase, keep walking straight down the corridor to get to the washrooms.
Menu at Broom
The Broom menu at Bukit Bintang is uncomplicated with brunch on one side and coffee on the other. The cuisine is multicultural with lots of seafood. There are Malaysian and Japanese fusions, but also English and Swedish classics. Filtered water is free. Every table receives a glass bottle and cups once guests are seated. Lactose-intolerant coffee addicts rejoice! It’s nice to see that Broom offers soy and oat milk substitutes free of charge.

Food at Broom

I enjoyed the Summer of Lemons (RM26) way more than I thought I would. Usually brunch waffles are too sweet, but this one had lemon elements to balance out the sugar. The lemon curd had a strong tartness, while the lemon ice cream was a more subdued note. It was just a refreshing plate of waffles that felt light – I easily finished it without feeling bloated and jittery from a sugar high.

The amusingly named Chikin & Waffuru (RM32) is the most Japanese-inspired chicken and waffles I’ve seen. The chicken had super crunchy skin while retaining its juiciness on the inside. A generous drizzle of sweet and savoury otafuku sauce brings a standout flavour and really ties the whole dish together.
Saturday Worthy?

I can see why Broom is so highly rated and always rammed with locals and tourists. You can get a good plate of food that has a unique spin to it. The potentially long queue for a table and then another wait for food is not for the hangry or impatient, though. If you’re not keen on waiting, there are plenty of alternate options (like Breakfast Spot) along the same street.
