Breakfast Spot, Bukit Bintang

Brunch in bukit bintang KL

Breakfast Spot on Jalan Sin Chew Kee is deep in Bukit Bintang’s brunch battlefield. There are no less than five cafes, all next to each other, vying for the attention of hungry weekend diners. This cafe with a British Malaya flair makes no secret about the kind of place it is: a Breakfast Spot!

Ambience & Amenities

Breakfast Spot features a beautiful greenhouse dining area upon entering. Full-length windows and a transparent ceiling fill the space with natural light. The tables deeper into the restaurant are air-conditioned, which is the only reason to sit back there in my opinion. Breakfast Spot also has an upstairs, but it was closed off during our visit. It is definitely the most picturesque room with chintz-patterned accents and the walls painted a brilliant shade of teal.

Many of the negative reviews on Google complain about the bad service at Breakfast Spot. The auntie who seated us didn’t really smile when we walked in, but she was patient enough as we scouted for a good table and efficient with the menus when we sat down. I will admit that all of the servers had similarly apathetic expressions, and Mark joked that the cashier looked especially morose. Personally, we don’t need our butts kissed when we go out for lunch. As long as the restaurant brings our orders promptly and doesn’t openly act like they’re annoyed by our presence, we’re not too concerned about the service.

The toilets are at the back of the restaurant. Walk past the barista counter through the archway. In the back dining room, turn left down a hidden, narrow corridor where you’ll see a communal sink (you can see the circular mirror in the photo above). There are two small rooms with a toilet and extra paper on the shelf.

Menu at Breakfast Spot

Breakfast Spot’s menu includes a mix of fusion dishes, classic Western brunch, and local specialities. All of the food at Breakfast Spot is pork-free. However, it was frustrating that many items on the physical menu were not available to order. It wasn’t because they were sold out – it was because the restaurant doesn’t even offer the items anymore. The worst case of this is the signature drinks. Apparently, three of the four drinks are no longer being served (only the Mont Blanc is still available).

The cabinets next to the cashier have pastries and cake slices that aren’t on the menu. There are bottles of free water next to the cabinet. The water tasted really metallic and terrible during our visit, though.

Breakfast Spot KL review

I’ve eaten a lot of chicken and waffles, but Breakfast Spot’s Chicken Waffle (RM27) is one of the prettiest versions I’ve eaten. The chicken’s extra crunchy skin contained the juicy flesh inside. The perfectly cooked poached egg released a rich, dark orange yolk when cut, and the Thai basil brought an extra pop of colour and flavour to the plate. However, the waffle didn’t taste fresh. Instead of being fluffy and crispy, it had a chewy texture throughout. I suspect that it had been prepared ahead of time and reheated. We barely used the provided syrup. It was a weird flavour combination with the salted egg sauce.

The Prawn Macaroni (RM28) included five large prawns. The cheese had an attractive browning on top and gave stringy pulls when I scooped a bite. The smooth béchamel sauce had the right amount of garlic without being overpowering. I didn’t enjoy the mini-sized macaroni, though. Having to eat this with a spoon made the meal less satisfying, like eating minestrone rather than a comforting pasta bake.

Saturday Worthy?

Breakfast Spot faces some stiff competition with its neighbouring peers, such as Broom or Three Years Old Cafe. I’ve never tried the latter, but I ate at Broom ages ago and can say that the food is better there. The only reasons to choose Breakfast Spot over the others are that the menu is more extensive and the vibe is nicer (at least in the greenhouse).

Price for 2 Pax: RM63.80

Chicken Waffle: RM27.00
Prawn Macaroni Pasta: RM28.00
10% Service: RM5.50
6% SST: RM3.30
