The second coming of Crust

Bread and Bakar is a rebranded, relocated reinvention of Mont Kiara’s beloved pizza place, Crust (formerly at Sunway 163). Though this location is much smaller than Crust, Bread and Bakar remains very popular with weekend brunchers who come for long catch-up sessions with friends.
Ambience & Amenities
Bread and Bakar has a T-shaped dining room. A handful of tables sit by the coffee counter, while the main area has a greenhouse vibe with huge windows on three sides and plenty of lush greenery – even under the tabletops! The circular tables in the centre have a faux moss terrarium under the glass.

Bread and Bakar doesn’t have an in-house toilet, but the KaMi Residences’ washrooms are steps away. Exit the restaurant and look for the overhead sign that points to the left. The facilities are two small rooms with a toilet, sink and soap. There was no paper in either stall, so grab a napkin from the restaurant before going. Since KaMi Residences manages these toilets rather than Bread and Bakar, they may be a little dirty or poorly stocked.
Menu at Bread and Bakar
Bread and Bakar’s menu is a Frankenstein job of Crust’s most popular items with a few new options. There are the original favourites, such as the salt beef sandwich, burgers, and pizzas, along with updated simple classics like build-your-own breakfast. The new additions include Middle Eastern-style rice bowls and Malaysian comfort food like curry laksa and nasi lemak. Filtered water is free, though it only comes in small glasses that you have to request.

Food at Bread and Bakar

As lovers of Crust’s burgers, we had to try the Cheeseburger and Fries (RM32) to see if it was as good as we remember. The dish looks identical, from the pretzel bun down to the stone slab it’s served on. Unfortunately, the first bite had a chunk of hard gristle, but the rest of the burger was good eats. The meat had the same juiciness we remember, helpfully caught by the paper wrap. The kitchen didn’t skimp on the toppings, with plenty of cheese, savoury sauce and caramelised onions on the patty.

The Lahpet Rice Set (RM28) took a while to prepare. Our burger was half eaten by the time it arrived. The chicken cubes are incredibly succulent. I could easily bite through them and rip them apart. The mild, curry-like sauce in the ramekin elevates the overall taste. The rice is flavourful on its own and has a pleasing crunch from the nuts and fresh veggies.
Saturday Worthy?

We hoped that the food at Bread and Bakar was a return to form. The kind of food that made us want to come back for, like Crust. I’d say it did its job. The best dishes (in my opinion) are only served after 6 pm. We enjoyed our meal enough to want to return one evening and try some of Bread and Bakar’s more interesting burgers and pizzas.
