Overpaying for average food.
Embodying the soul and attitude of New York City, Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes‘ award-winning burgers and outrageous Crazyshakes have gotten many mouths watering on social media. With locations in the swankiest parts of Las Vegas, Singapore and now KL, Black Tap brings American gluttony to Kuala Lumpur. Everything’s bigger in America – including the prices!
Ambience & Amenities
Black Tap has a sleek black-and-white colour scheme. There are plenty of seating options: cosy booths, at the bar, out on the small patio, and even on the second floor. Each table is stocked with condiments, including a variety of hot sauces. The view out the windows is dull – just of the road and drop-off area of Sunway Resort. Black Tap fills up during the lunch rush with office workers and resort guests, so go early if you want your choice of seat.
The washroom is at the back of the restaurant. Go around the central bar on the left side, past the Crazyshake assembly station. The women’s toilet was clean and fully stocked with toilet paper and soap.
Menu

Burgers are king of the Black Tap menu. Snacks and wings will fill in the edges, and there are salads for the weirdos who come here to eat healthy. Black Tap is a pork-free restaurant but not halal since they serve alcohol.
On the reverse side of the menu, there is a large selection of alcohol with cocktails, wine and craft beers from around the world. The Happy Hour deal runs daily from 2 pm to 7 pm and is buy 3 get 1 free. Black Tap’s over-the-top Crazyshake milkshakes are an extreme indulgence, but the price is absurd – they cost as much as the burgers!
If you have no money, the lunch deal at Black Tap is the only way you’ll get a taste of their craft burgers and Crazyshakes for a price that won’t leave you homeless. The new menu now has salad, snack and hotdog options added to the lunch deal. For only RM3, guests can add a shooter of one of Black Tap’s famous shakes. The size looked like a 2 oz shot glass, but it’s a vast difference from the RM70 you’d pay for the full size.
Food
I stopped in for Black Tap’s lunch deal because I am not paying RM75 for a burger. The obvious thing to order is the All-American Burger, which is much more affordable at RM29. It is the basic burger and the benchmark for the rest of Black Tap’s burgers, I figured. It didn’t look too impressive when it arrived, with some assembly required and cheese that looked like swamp ooze.
The beef patty had a good texture that held together and was not dripping with grease. However, the taste was disappointingly lacking. I think it was seasoned with just salt and pepper. It could have used more interesting spices or herbs to elevate it, especially since the toppings were so boring. The special sauce was spicy mayonnaise, which provided most of the flavour.
Saturday Worthy?
The All American Burger I ate is worth RM29, but certainly not the regular price of RM49. I’ve had way better burgers for the same price or cheaper at Crust or Man Man Cafe, for example. The ingredients used here aren’t particularly interesting or high-end. Even the Wagyu burgers cost 25% more than at an upscale restaurant. The Crazyshakes look impressive, but they’re downright difficult to drink with an entire slice of cake in the way. Black Tap is just a ridiculously overpriced restaurant where you’ll be paying a massive premium for the Instagram foodie picture.
