Cotta, Mont Kiara

Ricotta cheese is an underrated ingredient that you rarely see in Malaysia. Cotta will show ricotta lovers all the different ways to enjoy this rich and creamy delicacy. This unexpected find is hidden on the sixth floor of the Verve Suites on Jalan Kiara 5.

Ambience & Amenities

Take the elevator next to the MyNews at Verve Suites. Go to the sixth floor, and the restaurant is at the end of the small courtyard.

Cotta is going for a “green, industrial chic” aesthetic with lots of grey concrete offset by plants. Hard bench seating runs along one wall, and there are also a couple of simple deck tables out front.

The toilets are outside of the restaurant. Exit and head back toward the elevators. The ladies’ washroom is just past the staircase, while the men’s is one floor down.

Open-faced sandwiches are the speciality at Cotta. This is not the place if you have lactose intolerance. There are exactly four main dishes without ricotta. There are cakes at the front counter not listed on the menu. Though the food at Cotta is pork-free, they have a few beers on offer. Filtered water is free and comes in a large bottle for the table.

The slow-cooked beef on the Chuck Mooris (RM28) is the standout ingredient. It had a strong smoky flavour, if you like that sort of thing, but I thought it was a bit too much. The sambal is super spicy, so we only used a small dab of it. Mark liked this one better, but I preferred our other sandwich.

I was lucky to snag an order of the Pate-k Phillippe (RM27). This sandwich is a limited special where the cafe only serves 10 per day. The overall flavour was tangy from the pickles and balsamic reduction. The chicken liver pate is evenly spread across the bread and gave a rich, mouthwatering umami to the sandwich.

Saturday Worthy?

Although the dishes at Cotta were delicious, they’re small and not very filling. We went and got dessert somewhere cheaper afterwards. If you want to feel full, expect to order several dishes like at a tapas restaurant and pay the resulting hefty bill.

Price for 2 Pax: RM70.00

Chuck Mooris: RM28.00
Pate-k Phillippe: RM27.00
Chrysanthemum Kombucha: RM15.00
