VCR, Mont Kiara

Posted on By The Perpetual Saturday No Comments on VCR, Mont Kiara

Not to be confused with its sister sandwich cafe a few steps down, VCR is a cafe and bakery expansion to the popular brunch chain. Whereas Stacks is almost exclusively food between two pieces of bread, VCR offers the more traditional brunch experience complete with a freshly baked sweet at the end if you like.

Ambience & Amenities

VCR is a bright space akin to sitting in a greenhouse with large, full-length windows surrounding the room. It’s a bit warm here with only one portable AC unit (aimed at the staff counter) and ceiling fans to cool the room down.

The toilets are next to the cafe. Exit through the front door or the gap in the barrier by the bakery counter. Turn right down the corridor, and the washrooms are on the right side.

The VCR menu is more varied with classic brunch cafe mainstays such as all-day breakfast, pasta and pizzas. Don’t forget to check the bakery counter to see what croissants, cakes and tarts look good that day. You can even buy sourdough loaves if they haven’t sold out yet. Water is free – there’s a bottle on every table.

Food at VCR

The Pennsylvania Soul (RM30) is a decent amount of food for the price. The chicken had a super crunchy skin and juicy meat on the inside. There was enough protein to balance the perfectly cooked waffle, so I never had a bite without chicken. The sriracha mayo’s flavour dominated and reduced the pomegranate seeds to merely an attractive visual aspect. For once, I had enough syrup to last the entire meal. The chrysanthemum syrup was light and easy to drizzle, and the floral note was apparent. I would order this again, no doubt.

It took effort to cut through the Croissant Loaf Benedict (RM35). The table beneath us rocked dangerously as we sawed through the bread. However, the croissant base kept crisp even when soaked with the runny egg yolk. This is the choice for onion lovers, with a generous sprinkling of green onions and fried shallots.

Saturday Worthy?

It took us a long time to try VCR because of how pretentious and overpriced I found VCR Stacks to be. A quick peek at the menu shows it’s at the Mont Kiara standard, both in price and offerings. We were impressed with our delicious meals, and we both even have a second dish that we’re curious to try on a second visit, so we will definitely be back.

Price for 2 Pax: RM75.40

Pennsylvania Soul: RM30.00
Croissant Loaf Benedict: RM35.00
10% Service: RM6.50
6% SST: RM3.90
