Simply Sandwiches, TTDI

Sandwich shops in KL Malaysia

Simply Sandwiches makes no secret about what they’re all about. A staple at picnics and the go-to meal for busy (or lazy) people, this second-floor cafe dedicates itself to one of the oldest and well-loved convenience foods.

Ambience & Amenities

Simply Sandwiches cafe TTDI

Simply Sandwiches looks like a refuge for creative folks. Movie posters, abstract art, and vintage records decorate the walls. The mismatched furniture only enhances the eclectic vibe. There are a few board and card games on the shelf near the windows to encourage long hangout sessions.

The toilets are at the back of the cafe. Walk past the ordering counter and turn left. There’s a separate room for men and women, with a communal sink.

You’d better be craving food between two slices of bread if you’re choosing to eat here. Though, Simply Sandwiches’ menu includes a very small selection of non-sandwichy options such as spaghetti, rice bowls, and snack food. The cafe provides free filtered water once you’ve ordered.

Food at Simply Sandwiches

Simply Sandwiches TTDI review

I was taken aback by how basic the Beef Salami (RM22) was. Three slices of beef salami, a cold processed cheese slice and greens in between simple multigrain bread. It’s like the sandwich an immigrant mom makes for a packed lunch after their kid demanded “white people lunch” because the other white children at school teased them for the fried rice they brought yesterday. The flavours were nothing special, and I certainly would not recommend ordering this. Considering the simplicity of the ingredients, you could make this sandwich at home for less than RM5.

The Beef Bacon Grilled Cheese (RM28) was better. It looked appetising, at least, with nicely grilled sourdough and a decent bacon-to-cheese ratio. However, it was one of the worst grilled cheeses I’ve eaten in a restaurant. The beef bacon was rubbery, so I kept getting bites of tough, stringy fat that I had to separate with my fingers. The sandwich was also weirdly sweet, I think from the mystery “orange sauce” that the cafe puts on everything. I cannot put my finger on what this sauce is. My best guess is salad cream mixed with chilli sauce. The only good thing about our sandwiches was that they came with a side of fries instead of potato chips – a welcome substitution.

Saturday Worthy?

Long Black (RM10) and Iced Peach Tea (RM11)

We passed up eating at Craft Origin Cafe to try this place. Simply Sandwiches was a huge disappointment and I have no idea how this cafe got such high Google reviews. Sandwiches this bad from a place that specialises in sandwiches is astounding. Their food tastes like it’s undergone enshittification with cheap ingredients and poor assembly.

Price for 2 Pax: RM71.00

Beef Salami: RM22.00
Grilled Cheese Beef Bacon: RM28.00
Iced Peach Tea: RM11.00
Long Black: RM10.00
